If you live abroad

Two weeks of annual leave do not build a care system. They inspect it. Before you fly, you need one person in Greece with a power of attorney, a paid local coordinator or cousin who answers the hospital at 07:00, and a written plan for the month after you leave. WhatsApp photos of the fridge are not a plan.

A Greek notarial power of attorney issued while your parent still has capacity is worth more than any later argument with a bank in Kallithea. If they no longer sign, you are in court-appointed guardianship territory. Start that with a lawyer in Greece, not with a consulate queue the week of discharge.

Αν είστε ο αδελφός που έμεινε, μην κουβαλάτε μόνοι το εξιτήριο από ντροπή. Ζητήστε χρήματα και αποφάσεις γραπτά. Αν είστε αυτοί που λείπουν, πληρώστε συντονιστή ή γραφείο κατ’ οίκον με αντικαταστάτη, όχι «μια κυρία που βρήκε η γειτόνισσα» χωρίς σύμβαση.

Πρεσβείες βοηθούν σε υπογραφές και επικυρώσεις. Δεν βρίσκουν φροντίστρια. Δεν μιλάνε με τον ΕΦΚΑ αντί για εσάς.

A short checklist

• Notarial power of attorney, plus a spare original
• One Greek mobile that is always on during the hospital week
• Shared folder: ID, AMKA, meds, bank, insurance
• Money for a 14-day bridge (nights, taxi, deposit) without a family vote
• Return ticket that assumes the plan must work without you
